Since I became a mum last August, my eye area has aged five years. I'm prone to more puffiness, more pronounced dark circles, and there's even a new zona of fine lines taking hold under my lower lashes. Until recently, I'd never had the time or the need to incorporate an eye cream into my routine - but I'm discovering that one simple step can easily nourish and prevent further damage.
You may think that your daily moisturiser or night cream is enough to protect the precious skin around your eyes, but as this area is devoid of its own sebaceous glands, it really needs to be treated with a little extra love and care. While they may seem unnecessary to some, eye creams are created specifically for the highly sensitive area around the eye and, when incorporated into your routine, can combat puffiness, brighten dark circles and even fade fine lines.
Choosing the right cream
To get the most out of an eye cream, choose one that can be applied during the day and one for night. For the night-time option, look for a product that offers anti-ageing benefits without irritation (such as Alpha-Contour by Yon-Ka). Want a product that fades under-eye bags and dark circles quickly and easily? Opt for Phyto-Contour! I like to test eye creams on my hand, and I always choose a cream that disappears completely and without too much effort.
When to use it
Eye cream should be applied morning and night for best results. These are the everyday miracle products and believe me when I tell you that your make-up routine isn't complete without them. These creams help to protect the area under the eyes and prevent any further damage that could worsen wrinkles or hyperpigmentation.
When applying, be sure to use a light touch and the pad of your ring finger to apply the product. For most of us, our ring finger is our weakest finger, making us less likely to inflict damage on the very delicate skin around our eyes. If you have a minute before bed, gently apply your cream under your eyes and use your ring finger to massage up to the brow bone. While I dreaded the idea of an extra step between me and my pillow, I now love the ritual of applying my eye cream - and I particularly love the results.
